The Benefits of Bovine Colostrum for Children

A growing body of evidence highlighting the benefits of bovine colostrum for children has demonstrated that its alias of ‘Liquid Gold’ is absolutely deserved.

Parents are sick to death of their children coming home from daycare with yet another bug and Colostrum may just be the right tool for the job of preventing that endless cycle. It makes total sense that Colostrum could afford our toddlers and children of all ages the additional level of immune support and intelligence that it once did in those early days of infant hood.

Bovine Colostrum is research backed to demonstrate the following benefits –

  • Reduction in Acute/Gastroenteritis Diarrhea Duration & Severity. Trials in outpatient settings show that bovine colostrum (BC) shortens the duration of diarrhea, reduces stool frequency, and decreases pathogen load in stool.
  • Prevention and Reduction of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections (URTIs). Studies in preschool children show that colostrum supplementation reduces frequency, severity, and duration of URTIs including RSV, Influenza and Covid19.
  • Prevention/ Reduction of Otitis Media. Many ear infections follow or are related to respiratory infections (e.g. Eustachian tube dysfunction when URTIs are present) Bovine colostrum acts as an intermediary preventing the cause.
  • Reduce the sensitivity and severity of allergies to environmental factors.
  • May aid in the reduction of Tonsil and Adenoid inflammation (More on this below).
  • Bovine Colostrum has bioactive components that support mucosal immunity, reduce gut inflammation, reduce intestinal permeability and improve microbiome composition. Bovine Colostrum can also suppress  H. pylori infection and lower inflammation.
  • Bovine Colostrum provides passive immunity via immunoglobulins and other antimicrobial proteins. Can help neutralize pathogens, reduce pathogen load. May suppress inflammation (e.g. decreases in cytokine markers) in certain infections.
  • Failure to thrive or poor growth in children. Bovine Colostrum is rich in proteins, growth factors, vitamins, and minerals, research shows it should be considered for use in children with growth failure.

If you’re on a gut healing journey, are tried of recurrent respiratory infections sapping your energy, or just need additional immune support, bovine immunoglobulins and colostrum offer a safe, natural, and effective way to support both gut and respiratory immunity. Their broad-spectrum activity, ability to neutralize pathogens, and role in immune modulation make them powerful tools for preventive and therapeutic care.

Colostrum from consciously sourced dairy farms (must be ethical in their collection ensuring that calves receive what they need before harvesting excess) is absolutely loaded with raw materials not found in any other food.

Chemically, it is a very complex fluid, rich in nutrients, natural antibodies relevant to the environment and –

  • Secretory IgA: Protects the layer of mucus on the gut wall and strengthens gut barrier integrity.
  • Lactoferrin: Provides antiviral properties, improves iron uptake in the gut.
  • Leukocytes: Help protect the body against infections and foreign substances.
  • Growth factors Epidermal growth factor and Transfer factors. Play a critical role in regulating cell growth, proliferation, and differentiation. Antigen binding and antigen-specific cell-mediated immunity is boosted.
  • Immunoglobulins: Naturally occurring antibodies that can be used to stimulate a robust immune response.
  • Enzymes – lactoperoxidase, and lysozyme that are naturally occurring antibacterial enzymes that helps prevent periodontal disease and tooth decay.
  • HMO’s Human Milk Oligosaccharides that support beneficial gut bacteria such as Bifidobacteria.

Colostrum is generally well tolerated in children who are not milk-allergic or extremely premature. Most side effects are mild and transient (e.g. mild GI discomfort) if they occur at all. In a registered clinical trial with preschoolers, no significant adverse GI symptoms over study period.

How Bovine IgGs Can Help Support the Tonsils and Adenoids.

After ingestion, bovine immunoglobulins act as binders both in the gut and our respiratory system. Immunoglobulins bind to respiratory pathogens, bacteria, allergens, endotoxins and exotoxins which reduces the impact of these pathogens on the immune system and dampens the inflammatory triggers that can follow.

Immunoglobulins influence our immune activity in the gut and as well as Waldeyer’s Ring – the body’s first immune defense line in the aero-digestive system. Waldeyer’s Ring is a circle of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue which includes the Tonsils and Adenoids. These tissues are responsible for sampling incoming antigens/ allergens and primes the immune system for activity if needed.

The immunoglobulins found in colostrum helps to train” and modulate tonsillar immune responses, strengthening our frontline defenses against aero-digestive invaders. This in turn limits pathogen spread to the middle ear, sinuses, lungs, or gut. Whilst relevant to us all, it is particularly relevant for children as they encounter many common pediatric infections – URTIs, sinusitis, possibly otitis media via reduced nasopharyngeal pathogen load.

“After ingestion, Bovine IgGs find and bind to respiratory pathogens, leading to immune modulation of the tonsils that make up Waldeyer’s ring—the first immune defense line of the aero-digestive system which protects the entry of external environment agents to the digestive and respiratory tubes…….. “Study data suggests that oral ingestion of bovine immunoglobulins modulates immune function in the airways.”

Colostrum contains growth factors and cytokine modulators that can reduce over activation of tonsillar and adenoid tissues and may help balance the immune response to make it strong enough to defend, but not overly inflamed which is important in recurrent tonsillitis or airway hyper-reactivity.

Because Waldeyer’s ring is the “gatekeeper,” its modulation by bovine colostrum indirectly supports:

  • Respiratory immunity (fewer or milder colds, URTIs).

  • Gut immunity (pathogens bound before they descend into the GI tract).

  • Immune tolerance (potentially reduced reactivity to allergens).

We chose the Colostrum with the highest bovine immunoglobulin content on the market, delivering between 28-32% IgG per dose in comparison to the industry standard of 20%. Always grass fed and sourced from right here on Australia’s Gippsland Coast. Never made from cows that have been Hyper Immunized. Antibiotic and hormone free.

We think the world of colostrum and have noted the benefits it affords our own family, namely in getting over upper respiratory infections much quicker and keeping them at bay in the first instance.

Bovine Colostrum blends so easily into yogurt, smoothies or even homemade ice cream during churning. The kids won’t even know it is there we promise.
