Each B vitamin serves a specific function in the body:

B vitamins are essential for energy production, cognitive function and overall wellbeing. However, not all B vitamin supplements are absorbed efficiently. Many formulas contain synthetic or less bioavailable forms that need to be converted, and this can vary based on individual metabolism, digestive health and genetic factors.

Folinic acid (5-formyltetrahydrofolate calcium) is a ready-to-use folate source that bypasses dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) conversion. While not methylated, it does not need the DHFR enzyme to be converted into methylfolate. Not everyone does well with methylfolate, so it’s worth not getting caught up in the hype.

Folinic acid has broader metabolic flexibility than methylfolate, supporting both methylation and DNA synthesis throughout the body, and it supports healthy homocysteine levels already within the normal range. Dr Ben Lynch has been one of the most vocal advocates for folinic acid.

Some B vitamins need to be converted into their active forms before they can support cellular function. For example:

• Folic acid (synthetic B9) must be converted into methylfolate (active B9) before the body can use it.
• Cyanocobalamin (synthetic B12) needs conversion to methylcobalamin, the form the body naturally uses.

For people with genetic variations that affect nutrient metabolism, these conversions may not happen efficiently. Choosing a supplement with pre-activated B vitamins can help support absorption.
